Get info about Saint Johns University auto mechanics, registering in a technical degree program, and taking free tests online. Which college degrees offer you the best chances of finding employment after graduation? If you complete the auto mechanics major, for example, there are a variety of specializations that may appeal to you such as gasoline engine repair, racing engine design, or mechanical engineering. Further, due to advances in automotive engineering, there is a growing shortage of auto mechanics graduates, and highly-skilled engineers in general.

Here are some basic tips from an auto mechanic on how to check the condition of an automobile. Does the car start right up when you turn the ignition key? If not, the electrolyte solution in the battery acid may be low, or there may be an electrical short in the charging system. To test brake systems, just tap the brakes at high speed, and see if there's any noise or a spongy feel to the brake pedal, which indicates either air in the brake lines, or decomposition in brake fluid viscosity.

Testing the cylinder compression of either the diesel or gasoline engine is simple as well. Just find a hill, and try to accelerate up it from a standing start, noting any black smoke or backfire noise that results from incorrect ignition timing, valve wear, or pinston ring problems within the engine itself. How does the car shift through the gears? Is it smooth, or do you feel a clunk as it shifts, which may be a signal that transmission repair is required.

Aerospace Engineering Programs

Saint Johns University auto mechanics
Aerospace engineers may design aircraft, space vehicles, satellites, and missile systems. In addition, they test prototypes to make sure that they function according to design. Aerospace engineers are employed in building, analysis and design of commercial aircraft, missile systems for national defense, or spaceships. Aerospace engineers are employed primarily in manufacturing, research and development, and must have a bachelors degree in aerospace engineering or another related field. In addition, aerospace engineers that work on projects that are related to national defense will need a security clearance.

Aerospace operations technicians and mechanics, on the other hand, need only an associates degree to begin earning a good salary. They operate and maintain equipment used in developing, testing, and producing new aircraft and spacecraft. Increasingly, these workers must be able to use computer-based modeling (CAD) and simulation tools in their work. Certification is offered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Both companies and the FAA seek to ensure the highest standards for the safety of the aircraft. In fact, SpaceTEC, the National Science Foundation Center for Aerospace Technical Education, coordinates a nationwide program through community and technical colleges to help students prepare for certification. The median annual wage for aerospace engineers with a bachelors degree was $107,830, while aircraft technicians and mechanics holding an associate's degree earned $66,180, as of May 2015.

Engineering Job Listings

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.
